6. Australia was originally a British penal colony, a settlement to exile prisoners from the rest of the population. In fact, Australia Day - January 26 - is the anniversary of ships arriving in Sydney carrying lots of British convicts!

7. Because Melbourne and Sydney could not agree on which city should be the capital of Australia, it was decided that neither of them should be, and so a new capital called Canberra would be built in the middle.
